Four tourists from West Bengal were rescued from drowning by lifeguards while bathing in the sea at Puri beach on Tuesday, averting a potentially fatal incident. The incident occurred at Sector No. 9 beach near Chaitanya Chhak, where the tourists had entered the water together.
According to reports, the tourists were bathing in the sea when they were suddenly swept into deeper waters and began struggling to stay afloat. Other visitors noticed the situation and immediately alerted the lifeguards stationed nearby. Acting swiftly, the lifeguards rushed into the sea and successfully rescued all four tourists, bringing them safely back to shore. Locals said the rescued tourists were administered first aid and were in stable condition.
Swift Response by Lifeguards
The timely intervention by the lifeguards ensured that no loss of life occurred. All four tourists were pulled out from deep waters and were reported to be safe following the rescue operation. The incident once again underscored the crucial role played by lifeguards in ensuring beach safety, particularly during periods of heavy tourist movement.
Safety Concerns Ahead of Tourist Rush
With a high influx of tourists expected in the coming days, the incident has raised concerns over visitor safety along the Puri coastline. Local residents have demanded the deployment of both government and private lifeguards across all beach stretches to prevent any untoward incidents.

Despite the presence of lifeguards at major beach locations, such incidents continue to occur, largely due to tourists ignoring safety advisories. Lifeguards regularly caution visitors against venturing into deeper waters and warn them about strong currents and rip current zones. However, sources said many tourists fail to heed these warnings, leading to such dangerous situations.
