Odisha is fast emerging as one of India’s most promising destinations for foreign travellers, with its tourist footfall rising steadily year after year. From ancient temples to pristine coasts and vibrant festivals, Odisha's unique cultural and natural charm is drawing an increasing number of international visitors, placing the state firmly on the global tourism map. The trend highlights growing international interest in Odisha’s culture, heritage and natural destinations.
Foreign Tourist Arrivals Over Five Years
According to official data, 1.33 lakh foreign tourists visited Odisha in the last five years. In 2020, the state received 10,206 foreign visitors. The figure dropped to 2,269 in 2021, reflecting global travel disruptions, but increased sharply in subsequent years. In 2022, Odisha recorded 22,172 foreign tourists, which further rose to 45,173 in 2023. By 2024, the number climbed to 53,392, marking a significant recovery and growth in tourist inflow.
Japan Leads Among Visiting Nations
Among the countries contributing to this rise, Japan tops the list with 4,423 tourists visiting Odisha. Italy stands second with 3,830 visitors. Germany registered 3,722, followed closely by the UK with 3,715 and France with 3,008 tourists.
The continuous increase in foreign tourist arrivals reflects Odisha’s expanding global appeal. The detailed figures, presented in a written reply by Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida in the Assembly, underline the state’s growing prominence on the international tourism map.
