Five saltwater crocodiles died at Nandankanan Zoological Park in Odisha's Bhubaneswar over a span of eight days, prompting authorities to initiate a detailed investigation into the cause of death.
The fatalities were reported between January 23 and January 30, with officials stating that the exact reason will be known only after laboratory test reports are received.
Deaths Reported Over Eight-Day Period
According to officials, a total of five saltwater crocodiles died at the zoo during the period under review. Of the deceased reptiles, three were males and two were females.
The deaths occurred at different intervals, raising concerns among wildlife authorities and prompting immediate veterinary intervention.
Clinical Symptoms Observed
Before their deaths, the affected saltwater crocodiles reportedly exhibited clinical symptoms such as weakness and a noticeable reduction in appetite. Zoo authorities clarified that no external injuries, wounds, or signs of abnormal or aggressive behaviour were observed in any of the animals prior to their deaths.
Centre For Wildlife Health Consulted
Following the death of the first crocodile, Nandankanan authorities immediately consulted the Centre for Wildlife Health (CWH). Acting on the advice of CWH experts, preventive and supportive treatment measures were initiated. All remaining saltwater crocodiles at the zoo were administered antibiotics as a precautionary step.
Post-Mortem Conducted, Samples Sent For Testing
Specialists from the Centre for Wildlife Health conducted post-mortem examinations on all five deceased crocodiles. Necessary biological samples were collected during the examinations and sent for laboratory analysis. Officials said the precise cause of death will be determined once the laboratory reports are received.
