A notorious mobile snatcher was arrested on Monday at the Bhubaneswar Railway Station after the GRP identified him using advanced face-scan technology, leading to the recovery of over four stolen mobile phones and helping police crack multiple pending cases across several districts.
Face-Scan Tech Leads to Swift Arrest
In a significant breakthrough, the Government Railway Police (GRP) used the Face App scanning system to detect and intercept the accused at the railway station. The man, identified as Amit Kumar Barik, had earlier been involved in several snatching incidents within the city and neighbouring districts.
Officials said the face-recognition system matched Amit’s image with existing criminal records, prompting the GRP team to surround and apprehend him immediately.

Multiple Mobile Phones Recovered
During the arrest, police recovered more than four stolen mobile phones from Amit’s possession. Preliminary investigation revealed that Amit was a habitual offender and had been targeting passengers in crowded areas, especially near railway stations.
"At the station, during the joint patrolling of RPF and GRP, one man was on the lift, and we found his activities to be suspicious. We traced him and interrogated him; firstly, he refused to admit his mistake. Later, he said his name is Amit Barik. We used a face scanner on him to find more information about him, and we got to know that he is involved in the case. A face scanner is multi multi-biometric identification system. When we click someone's picture on mobile, their previous criminal records and details will emerge," said Ashok Kumar Gochhayat, GRP Police Station In-charge.
Accused Linked to Several Cases
According to police sources, multiple cases are already registered against Amit in the Commissionerate Police records, as well as in several other district police stations. Further investigation is underway to trace his involvement in additional snatching and theft cases.
The successful arrest highlights the growing impact of technology in aiding law enforcement. With face-scan systems helping officers track repeat offenders quickly, authorities believe such tools will significantly strengthen crime detection and public safety at key transit hubs like Bhubaneswar Railway Station.
