Exchange of fire reported between security forces and Maoists in Saranda forest near Odisha border

An exchange of fire between security forces and Maoists was reported in the Saranda forest along the Odisha–Jharkhand border on Sunday, officials said.

An exchange of fire between security forces and Maoists was reported in the Saranda forest along the OdishaJharkhand border on Sunday, officials said.

The encounter reportedly lasted for nearly an hour after security personnel came face to face with Maoists during an operation in the forested region.

Sources said the gunfight took place near Marangponga in Kolbhanga under the jurisdiction of Jaraikela police station. The area lies close to the Odisha–Jharkhand border and has witnessed Maoist activity in the past.

One-Hour Exchange Of Fire

According to reports, security personnel engaged in a heavy exchange of gunfire with Maoists after encountering them in the Saranda forest. The exchange of fire is said to have continued for nearly one hour.

Officials indicated that some Maoists are believed to have been injured during the incident. However, there has been no official confirmation regarding casualties so far.

Maoist Leader Escapes

Notorious Maoist leader Misir Besra, who carries a reward of Rs 1 crore on his head, reportedly managed to escape from the spot during the operation. Security personnel were conducting operations in the area when the encounter took place.

Misir Besra is considered one of the key Maoist leaders operating in forested regions along the Odisha–Jharkhand border.

Search Operations Continue

Following the exchange of fire, security forces continued combing operations in the surrounding forest areas.

However, no bodies of Maoists or visual confirmation of injuries had been recovered from the site at the time of reporting.
