Allegations of illegal occupation at vacant government quarters have resurfaced in Bhubaneswar’s Unit-II area in Odisha. Following reports that a few individuals had forcibly occupied of the quarters, the enforcement teams of the Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) and the General Administration (GA) Department carried out an eviction drive on Tuesday.
According to reports, around 15 government quarters in the locality have been allegedly occupied illegally. Officials stated that the premises would be cleared of unauthorised occupants soon. While some of the quarters were found vacant, others were reportedly occupied by divyang persons and labour-class families seeking temporary shelter.
Many of the quarters were found in a state of disrepair, with damaged gates, grills, and surrounding boundary walls. Several premises also had visible termitaries, and lacked electricity connections.
Occupants Seek More Time
One of the residents said they had no intention to cause any problem but had moved into the quarters out of necessity.
“We are poor people, so we moved here to live without rent. The government officials should have given us some more time to move out,” the occupant said.
Officials added that the eviction operation will continue in the coming days to ensure that all illegally occupied government quarters in the area are vacated.
