A controversy erupted over the suspension of rituals at the revered Lingaraj Temple in Bhubaneswar, with the Brahman and Badu Nijog groups accusing each other of being responsible for the disruption. The development has triggered sharp reactions from political and administrative quarters, as the issue has deeply hurt the sentiments of devotees.
Amid the ongoing blame game, Ekamra MLA Babu Singh has issued a stern warning to the temple servitors. Expressing strong displeasure over the incident, the MLA described the stoppage of Lord Lingaraj’s rituals as ‘extremely unfortunate’ and unacceptable under any circumstances.
Strict Action Against Halting Rituals
He made it clear that strict action will be taken against those servitors who were involved in halting the rituals.
Babu Singh emphasised that servitors are entrusted with the responsibility of performing temple services and maintaining religious traditions, and they are not authorised to take unilateral decisions that affect centuries-old rituals. He stated that if there are grievances or demands, they should be resolved through dialogue and proper channels, but never by disrupting worship.

“All I want to say is that you are all sevayats. You are all because of Lord Lingaraj. None of you are above the Lord. So, why do you repeat such acts? Devotees are being hurt, and the Lord is deprived of worship. You are all divided in pride, and the Lord is paying the price. This is too much now. Sevayats are thinking they are bigger than the Lord. This is too saddening and heartbreaking, because our identity of Ekamra Khetra and Lord Lingaraj,” slammed Ekamra MLA Babu Singh.
The MLA further said that discussions with the government can always take place after the completion of daily rituals, adding that stopping the rituals reflects irresponsibility.
Appealing for restraint, Babu Singh urged all stakeholders to ensure that the faith and emotions of devotees are not hurt.
