A young man from Koraput’s Lankaput village became an example of determination by pursuing fitness and powerlifting despite severe physical disabilities. Surendra Muduli, who has lived his entire life with one amputated leg and a hand that functions only about 50 per cent, continues to maintain a disciplined fitness routine and aims to compete at higher levels.

Surendra visits the gym every day and never allowed his physical challenges to limit him. He also trains local youths and works in farming alongside his fitness pursuits, reportedly. With a desire to bring recognition to his district, he is now preparing for powerlifting and hopes to participate in district and national competitions in the future.

Sharing his motivation, Surendra said, “I come to the gym from 4 pm to 6 pm. I saw other people, and that inspired me to become fit as well and exercise. My mother used to tell me that when I was an infant, one of my legs was amputated due to some issues. I wish to compete with athletes. I do exercise like dips for biceps and triceps, chest and leg exercises as well.”

Those training with him describe him as an inspiration.

One of his friends at the gym said, “He inspires us as he does not have one leg and, with a barely functioning hand, he still manages to exercise and remain fit. He is very punctual and does all the exercises.”

Hopes for Government Support

Another friend added, “If he gets any assistance from the government to compete, he would definitely bring pride to the state and country.”

A fellow gym-goer said, “He travels around 9 km every day, and that alone inspires others. If he can participate in the Paralympics, he will get encouragement from the Odishagovernment and will also be able to compete at the national level.”
