Construction of a bridge in Balidihi village under Ayatpur panchayat of Banapur block in Khordha district of Odisha remains incomplete, causing severe difficulties for residents. The old bridge was reportedly demolished eight months ago for the new structure, but work has yet to resume.
As per reports, continuous rainfall has worsened the situation, making it difficult for villagers to step out of their homes, with ambulances and other vehicles unable to reach the area.
Waterlogging on the makeshift road left villagers wading through ankle-deep water to move around. Nearly 200 families have been affected, as the incomplete bridge cut off easy access to essential services.
Despite repeated appeals to officials and local representatives, the issue remains unresolved. A temporary path made of wooden planks and soil becomes impassable during rains, further isolating the locals.
Locals Voice Their Concerns
One of the villagers alleged government inaction, saying, “Even to buy vegetables we cannot go to the other side. The contractor had promised to finish the bridge construction in a month, but only two or three people worked for a few hours each day. We have requested the BDO and JE multiple times, but no action was taken.”
Another resident added that students are missing classes and those in medical need cannot access emergency services.
Officials Cite Rain and Local Protests for Delay
The Rural Development Department had sanctioned Rs 71.43 lakh for the Ayatpur–Balidihi road project for the 2024–25 financial year. The work began on February 25, 2025, with a completion deadline of April 24, 2025.
Assistant Engineer Sushant Mishra said, “Due to frequent rains and muddy conditions, dismantling took a lot of time. Villagers also protested the demolition as they were using the bridge to move their goods. When work finally began, continuous heavy rains caused further delays.”
The department has assured that construction will resume and complete soon.
