Dead elephant disappearance case: Kandhamal Ranger suspended, driver arrested Photograph: (OTV)
Action has been initiated in connection with the disappearance of a dead elephant from the Baliguda forest division in Kandhamal district, with the Forest Department and police intensifying the investigation. The driver of a forest ranger, Hrushikesh Panda, has been arrested in the case, officials said.
According to officials, Panda was arrested after it was revealed that a JCB machine allegedly used by the accused was deployed to dig a pit to bury the elephant’s carcass in an attempt to destroy evidence. However, the concerned forest ranger, Binay Kumar Bishi, remains absconding.
A case has been registered against three persons — Ranger Binay Kumar Bishi, his driver Hrushikesh Panda, and the JCB owner Antaryami Sahu — on charges of concealing information and tampering with evidence. Forest officials said the investigation is being carried out thoroughly.
Earlier, mutilated parts of the elephant’s carcass were recovered from Kantesir village under Kesinga police station in neighbouring Kalahandi district, strengthening suspicions of deliberate disposal of the carcass to suppress facts.
In view of the developments, Ranger Binay Kumar Bishi has been placed under suspension. A formal case has also been registered at the Belghar forest range against Bishi and others for allegedly suppressing information and destroying evidence related to the incident.
Forest and Environment Minister Ganesh Ram Singhkhuntia assured strict action against all those found guilty, stating that no individual involved in the crime would be spared.

“The department has already launched an investigation. We have directed the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) to take necessary action against those involved. This is a serious crime,” the Minister said.
Further investigation in the case is underway.
