Winter chill returns to Odisha Photograph: (OTV)
Two separate weather systems developing over the Bay of Bengal have intensified concerns over the possibility of a winter cyclone, even as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) maintains that neither system is likely to directly impact Odisha.
One of the systems, originating over the Malacca Strait, strengthened into a deep depression late on Tuesday and is expected to evolve into a cyclonic circulation later today as it moves towards the west-northwest.
According to IMD tracking, the first system that moved in from the Malacca Strait intensified rapidly into a well-marked low pressure before transforming into a deep depression. It is expected to intensify further by this afternoon. Meteorologists have noted that the system is gathering strength as it advances over the central Bay, but clarity on its landfall direction remains pending.
Second System Forms Near Sri Lanka
Simultaneously, another circulation has formed over the southwest Bay of Bengal, close to Sri Lanka and the adjoining Indian Ocean. This system is also intensifying, moving towards the north-northwest direction, and is expected to become a well-marked low-pressure pressure before turning into a depression over the next 24 hours.
IMD models suggest that although the second system will strengthen, its track likewise does not indicate a direct approach toward Odisha. Both disturbances are being monitored closely, but current forecasts consistently exclude Odisha from the potential impact zone.
Dry Week for Odisha Despite Cyclone Buzz
Despite cyclone speculation, Odisha is expected to remain largely dry for a week, according to the IMD’s regional office in Bhubaneswar. Only cloudy skies may appear in isolated pockets, while the majority of the state will experience stable weather conditions with no rainfall warnings issued after November 26.
In its mid-day bulletin, the regional centre stated that dry weather will continue across the state till December 2. Night temperatures are likely to fall by 2°C to 3°C over the next two days.
The IMD forecast also added that fog conditions remain the only immediate advisory, with a Yellow Warning issued for dense fog in parts of Koraput and Sundargarh till early Wednesday morning. No alerts are in place for the next six days.
