The low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a depression is centred about 1,040 km south-southeast of Gopalpur and 990 km southeast of Visakhapatnam, the India Meteorological Department informed on Saturday
Weather experts predict that it is likely to further intensify into a deep depression by tomorrow, and could eventually evolve into a cyclone on October 27.
Though the exact landfall point of the potential cyclone remains uncertain at this stage, it is believed that the system may affect the Andhra Pradesh coast.
Sharing details about the system, weather expert Sarat Sahu said, “The conditions over the Bay of Bengal are favourable, and the system is very likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm, potentially reaching the level of a severe cyclonic storm. More precise details will become clear once the system develops into a deep depression.”
“Preliminary forecasts suggest that southern, interior, and western Odisha may experience heavy rainfall. Wind speeds will depend on the storm’s path. If it crosses north of Visakhapatnam, the winds could be stronger; otherwise, wind speed may be lower. In districts such as Gajapati, Rayagada, and Malkangiri, wind speed is expected to be around 45–50 kmph,” Sahu added.
