Continuous rainfall since Wednesday, triggered by the impact of Cyclone Montha, has caused severe waterlogging across Odisha's Balasore town, leaving residents struggling with flooded homes, shops, and main roads.
Incessant downpours have led to the choking of drainage channels, which subsequently overflowed onto streets and residential areas. The Balasore–Remuna road has been particularly affected, with stagnant rainwater making daily movement difficult. Several households and business establishments have reported water entering their premises, forcing people to cope with soaked interiors and restricted mobility.
Recurring Monsoon Woes
Residents say such flooding has become a recurring ordeal during every monsoon season. Poor drainage design and lack of timely maintenance are seen as major causes behind the annual waterlogging crisis. With drainage water often flowing back into homes and shops, locals have voiced concerns about the growing risk of waterborne diseases.
Locals Blame Poor Drainage Management
Citizens have also blamed illegal constructions and ineffective urban drainage management for aggravating the situation. Many pointed out that even moderate rain now results in flooding, exposing the town’s fragile infrastructure and lack of preparedness for extreme weather events.
Residents added that had Cyclone Montha made a direct landfall in Balasore, the impact could have been catastrophic given the existing conditions. They have urged authorities to urgently upgrade the drainage system and implement stricter regulations to prevent similar crises in the future.
