Cyclone in Bay of Bengal: Weather expert shares details on possible impact and rainfall in Odisha Photograph: (OTV)
The low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a well-marked low-pressure area, raising the possibility of cyclonic development in the coming days, meteorologists predicted on Sunday.
As per the predictions, the system is expected to further intensify into a depression by November 24 and could potentially escalate into a cyclonic storm over the southwestern Bay of Bengal.
No Major Impact On Odisha
While the IMD is yet to predict the path, wind speed of the possible cyclone, weather expert Dr Sarat Sahu has said the system will have no impact on Odisha.
Speaking to OTV, Sahu said, “If we go through the climatological data, there has been no such threat of cyclone to Odisha after November 15. Generally, the systems formed during this period move towards Tamil Nadu or south Andhra Pradesh. Odisha experiences rainfall only if the system moves northwards. But there is no data on cyclones hitting Odisha during this period.”
“During this period, north and northwest India experience cold waves, the system gets weak along the east coast when it moves northwards,” Sahu added.
Rainfall Activities After December 1
Asked about rainfall activities, Sahu said the dry spell is likely to continue till November 30, and several parts of coastal Odisha may experience rain after December 1.

“There is no consistency in the observation of the present model over the Bay of Bengal. So it is not possible to predict the formation of the cyclone and its path right now. There will be no major impact on Odisha; however, there will be rainfall activities after December 1,” Sahu informed.
