CRPF Jawan ‘shoots self’ inside camp in Sundargarh, probe underway

A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan was found dead inside a camp in Odisha’s Sundargarh district on Monday, triggering concern within security circles. The incident occurred at Matakjharan village under the jurisdiction of Lathikata police station.

According to officials, the jawan was found dead inside the camp premises early in the morning. Police personnel rushed to the spot after receiving information and recovered the body. Preliminary reports indicate that the jawan allegedly died by suicide using his service weapon, though the exact circumstances leading to the incident are yet to be ascertained.

Identity of the Deceased

The deceased has been identified as Subash Prasad, a CRPF havildar. He was a native of Nandpur village in Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh. Officials said the incident has come as a shock to fellow personnel stationed at the camp.

Following the recovery, the body was shifted to Rourkela Government Hospital, where it has been kept for postmortem examination.

Investigation Underway

Police said the postmortem will be conducted after the arrival of the deceased jawan’s family members. Lathikata police have initiated an investigation to determine the exact cause behind the incident and are examining all possible angles.

Senior officials of the force are also said to be gathering information related to the incident. No official statement has yet been issued regarding the reasons behind the jawan’s death.
