An alleged case of a kangaroo court was reported from the Bangiriposi police station area in Mayurbhanj district on Friday, after villagers reportedly tied a couple to a tree and attempted to conduct an informal trial. Photographs related to the incident later went viral on social media, drawing widespread attention.
According to reports, the woman involved is married and had allegedly eloped with her male friend two days before the incident. The villagers later traced the couple, brought them back to the village, and restrained them by tying them to a tree, allegedly to question them over the matter.
Police Intervention And Official Warning
On receiving information, Bangiriposi police rushed to the spot and rescued the couple. Both families were subsequently called to the police station for questioning as part of the investigation.

Reacting to the incident, the Bangiriposi Inspector-in-Charge (IIC) said that kangaroo courts conducted in the name of justice are illegal. The IIC added that appropriate legal action would be taken against those involved in the incident as per the law.
