All India Congress Committee (AICC) announced Ghasiram Majhi as the party’s candidate for Nuapada Assembly constituency in the upcoming byelections.

“The Congress President, Mallikarjun Kharge, has approved the candidature of Ghasiram Majhi as Congress candidate for the ensuing bye-election to the Legislative Assembly of Odisha from 71 – Nuapada Constituency,” an AICC notification mentioned.
This move is part of the Congress party’s broader strategy to regain lost ground in western Odisha, particularly in tribal-majority districts like Nuapada. Ghasiram Majhi, a local leader known for his grassroots work, is expected to appeal to both tribal voters and youth in the region.
With this announcement, the Congress has intensified its campaign planning in Nuapada, aiming to present itself as a strong alternative to the Opposition BJD and the growing presence of ruling BJP in the constituency segment.
The seat has seen intense competition in recent elections, and party insiders believe that fielding a familiar and community-connected figure like Majhi could tilt the balance in their favour.
This candidate announcement marks a significant development in the Congress’s pre-poll preparations in Odisha as the State gears up for the high-stakes Assembly bypoll.
Worth mentioning, the Chief Election Commissioner of India, Gyanesh Kumar, announced on Monday that the Nuapada bypoll in Odisha will be held on November 11.
As per the announcement, the counting of votes will take place on November 14.
The announcement of the bypoll date followed a press conference by the Election Commission, which shared the new details and processes that will be incorporated for the highly anticipated Bihar Assembly elections.
A gazette notification for the bypoll in Nuapada will be issued on October 13. The last date of filing the nominations is October 20. While the date of scrutiny of the nominations will be on October 22, the last date of withdrawal of the candidature will be October 24.
The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO)-Odisha has announced that there are 2.48 lakh voters in Nuapada constituency. A total of 358 polling stations will be set up, including 56 new polling stations.
Voters can enroll their names till October 10. The CEO informed that webcasting will be conducted in all booths across Nuapada during the by-election.
