Bolangir: Tension prevailed at Gandhinagar Chhak in Bolangir town today after a group of locals blocked road by placing the body of a college girl who was mowed down by a truck earlier in the day.

The agitators demanded adequate compensation for family of the deceased and construction of a bypass road in the town.

The deceased identified as Mili Naik was a student of Government Plus II College Bolangir. As per reports, Naik was on her way to attend a coaching class in a bicycle when a truck hit her from behind near the Laxmijor bridge on NH-26, killing her on the spot. Following the incident, the driver fled the spot.

The district administration officials who reached the spot assured Rs 20,000 as compensation from the District Red Cross Fund immediately and a sum of Rs 2 lakh later. However, the agitators including students remained adamant and demanded Rs 25 lakh compensation.

Leader of Opposition Narasingha Mishra, who was apprised of the incident, wrote to the Chief Minister asking him to provide adequate compensation to the girl's family at the earliest.

"There have been repeated incidents of road mishap in the town and a bypass should be constructed at the earliest. We will intensify our agitation in coming days if our demands are not met," said one of the protestors.

However, the National Highway officials seem to be having land acquisition issue due to which construction of the bypass has been delayed, sources said.
