Class III girl drowns, her friend rescued in critical condition in Odisha’s Ganjam

A minor girl met her watery grave while taking a bath in a pond at Chudangapur village under Sanakhemundi block in Ganjam district, on Sunday. Another girl, who happens to be a friend of the deceased, has been rescued. Both were Class 3 students.

According to sources, one child started struggling in the water, prompting the other to attempt a rescue. During the rescue, the second child also went deep into the water.

On being informed, local fire services personnel immediately intervened and fished out the two children and took them to Digapahandi hospital. Unfortunately, doctors declared one of the children ‘dead’.

The other girl child, in critical condition, has been shifted to MKCG hospital in Berhampur for advanced treatment. Police are probing the fatal incident.

However, no comments were received from the local police in this regard.

Worth mentioning, earlier in another incident, a major tragedy was averted at Sector 8 of Puri Beach near Hotel Park on September 22 this year, when lifeguards and home guards had bravely rescued a tourist from drowning in the sea.

The tourist, then identified as Gopal Aicha from West Bengal, had been bathing with his family when he was pulled into deep waters by a strong wave.

As panic struck the family, they had immediately alerted on-duty lifeguards. Without any hesitation, the lifeguards, assisted by some home guards stationed at the beach, had plunged into the turbulent sea and successfully rescued the tourist.

Local police had later issued warnings to tourists and visitors, urging them not to enter deep into the waters due to unsafe conditions.
