However, Superintendent of the jail settled the inmate’s missing gold claim with a Rs 1.9 Lakh payout on Tuesday.

Following repeated appeals that yielded no result, the inmate had approached Choudwar Police Station, leading to the registration of a case and the payment of a hefty amount.

According to sources, the woman identified as Itishree Mohanty had deposited her gold earrings, nose pin, and ring with jail authorities at the time of admission, as per standard procedure. Allegedly, after being released on bail, she did not receive her belongings back despite multiple follow-ups.

After the complaint was filed, Jail Superintendent Sujit Kumar Roul reportedly compensated the inmate with Rs 1.9 lakh in lieu of the missing jewellery. Following the payment, the woman submitted a written statement expressing her willingness to settle the matter.

No comments were received from either the jail superintendent or the woman inmate in this regard.

Worth mentioning, Choudwar Jail had hogged the headlines earlier in another incident on February 14, after Odisha Police arrested one of the two inmates who had managed to escape from the jail. The accused was apprehended from the Vrindavan Mutt area following sustained efforts by law enforcement agencies.

According to official sources, the two prisoners had managed to flee from the high-security Choudwar Circle Jail during Dussehra festivities last year, triggering widespread concern and a massive manhunt.

Taking advantage of the absence of a warder on duty, the duo had allegedly cut through the bars of their cell and escaped from the facility.
