Balasore: As many as 17 children of Baripada village in Balasore district were hospitalised on Thursday after being allegedly given wrong medicines during a vaccination drive at an anganwadi centre.

As per reports, the healthcare staff at the anganwadi centre under Gopalpur community healthcare centre gave some vaccines to the kids along with iron tablets which were meant for mothers on Wednesday.

After taking the vaccines & tablets, the children felt uneasy and started vomiting. They were rushed to the nearby hospital and later, nine children were shifted to Balasore District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) after their condition deteriorated.

“Instead of giving paracetamol tablets, they gave iron tablets to the children. Such negligence has put the life of the kids in danger," said the mother of one of the affected kids.

"The children were given iron tablets after vaccination following which they started vomiting. The condition of the children is stable now but we need to conduct some more tests. However, the parents are not keen on admitting the children in the hospital," said Sambit Kumar Das, a doctor at the DHH.

This is not the first time that such a case of medical negligence has come to fore. Earlier, one Mamata Palei of Dohorapatna village under Chandbali block in Bhadrak district was left almost paralysed after a sterilization surgery. Mamata reportedly decided to go for a sterilization surgery with her husband’s consent and was admitted to Chandbali Community Health Centre (CHC) a few months ago. As per the allegation, a doctor named Pradyumna Sahu cut her alimentary canal during the operation.

Besides, on February 17, one Aishwarya Singhdeo was admitted to Gurudev hospital under Baidyanathpur Police Station in Berhampur after she complained of severe stomach ache. The doctors immediately advised her family to conduct appendicitis surgery to which they eventually agreed. However, her condition reportedly worsened post-surgery. Moments later, she breathed her last at the hospital. The incident led to a massive protest and it forced the Berhampur district administration to seal the hospital.
