Chandrabhaga Snana: Safety fears emerge at Chilika as floating vessel damage forces risky boat crossings Photograph: (OTV)
Serious safety concerns have surfaced at Chilika after damage to one of the two floating bridges disrupted normal movement, forcing commuters to rely on overcrowded boats during the Chandrabhaga Snana. The situation turned chaotic at Jahnikuda from early morning as a massive influx of devotees and travellers was witnessed.
With the damaged floating bridge vessel rendering the route partially unusable, people were left with no alternative but to cross the stretch by boat. Disturbing visuals showed passengers being ferried along with two-wheelers and auto-rickshaws on the same boats, raising alarm over the absence of basic safety measures and violation of standard transport norms.
Several boats were reportedly overloaded, with no visible arrangements for life jackets or safety gear for passengers. The lack of regulation and monitoring amid the heavy rush added to the distress of commuters, many of whom expressed fear while undertaking the crossing.
The affected stretch is a key transit route for travellers moving between Ganjam and Puri, as it offers a shorter and more convenient passage, especially during peak occasions such as Chandrabhaga Snana. The disruption led to long queues and confusion as authorities struggled to manage the surge in footfall.
Concerns have been further amplified in light of a previous incident in which a visitor reportedly lost his life after slipping from the floating bridge at the same location. The latest developments have once again highlighted serious gaps in crowd management and safety preparedness at the site.
Despite the risks, large numbers of people continued to use the route, exposing themselves to potential danger. The incident has prompted calls for immediate intervention by the authorities to restore infrastructure, regulate boat operations, and ensure adequate safety arrangements during large religious gatherings.
