A car rammed into a patrolling Police Control Room (PCR) vehicle on the Puri–Bhubaneswar National Highway late on Saturday night, causing extensive damage to the police vehicle.
The incident occurred near the Sata Shankha police outpost bridge when the PCR van was engaged in routine night patrolling.
According to police sources, the speeding car hit the PCR vehicle from behind with considerable force. The impact was so severe that one entire side of the PCR van was completely crushed.
At the time of the accident, three police personnel including a sub inspector were present inside the PCR vehicle. Fortunately, none of them sustained injuries, though the vehicle suffered major damage.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the accident took place at around 1.30 am.
After hitting the PCR van, the car reportedly overturned thrice before finally coming to a halt on the road. All occupants of the car were allegedly under the influence of alcohol at the time of the mishap, raising serious concerns over drunken driving on the busy national highway.
Four youths travelling in the car were detained and taken to the police station for questioning. Further legal action is likely to be initiated after completion of medical examination and investigation.
