BMC steps up measures to tackle rising air pollution in capital city

BMC has issued instructions to all the Zonal Commissioners to ensure implementation of the decisions for proper air quality management in Bhubaneswar.

In view of the rising Air Quality Index (AQI) in the capital city of Odisha, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to take a series of strict measures to curb air pollution.

The decisions were taken at a high-level meeting on air quality management of Bhubaneswar under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) under the chairmanship of BMC Commissioner on December 29, 2025.

BMC has issued instructions to all the Zonal Commissioners to ensure implementation of the decisions for proper air quality management in Bhubaneswar.

It was decided to take up necessary measures to tackle the rising Air Quality Index in the city, which includes strict actions against hotels/dhabas, including closure of those using coal-based or wooden challahs. The drive shall initially start from the Lingaraj Temple area and subsequently in all areas of Bhubaneswar City.

CRUT will ensure the regular spraying/sprinkling of water in the premises of bus depots and bus stands, and ensure daily cleaning and washing of buses, which the Zonal Commissioner (I/c) of all Zones will ensure.

Strict enforcement of the prohibition of open burning will be conducted. The ZC (I/c) shall identify the defaulters for such incidents and impose a spot fine of Rs 5,000 for open burning violations and closure of shops, and ensure that shops use clean sources of cooking fuel.

Cooking under the Mid-Day Meal Programme in schools will be carried out only through the use of clean fuel, and the ZC (I/c) will enforce its implementation.

Strict enforcement of compliance by Ready Mix Plants as per SPCB guidelines, including adoption of air pollution prevention and control measures such as spraying/sprinkling of water and washing of vehicles.
