BJP MLA Babu Singh on Sunday issued a strong warning against any form of obscene dance or indecent performances by Jatra troupes at Khandagiri Mela in Bhubaneswar, asserting that such acts will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

Reacting to media reports on objectionable dance performances at Jatra pandals during the Khandagiri fair, the legislator said that all stakeholders are firmly committed to preserving the sanctity and cultural values of the historic event.
The BJP MLA stressed that the Khandagiri Mela holds deep religious and cultural significance and should reflect societal values and traditions. The MLA urged organisers and performers to respect public sentiments and ensure that all programmes remain within acceptable cultural norms.
The remarks come amid growing concerns over inappropriate performances by some Jatra troupes, prompting calls for stricter monitoring and regulation. Authorities are expected to keep a close watch to ensure the event proceeds in a dignified and orderly manner.
“Khandagiri Mela is not just a fair. It is a matter of our identity, emotions, and cultural heritage. We are determined that obscenity will not be allowed,” Babu Singh stated.
Worth mentioning, in a significant administrative decision ahead of the annual fair, it had been finalised that obscene dance performances will not be permitted during the fair this year. The decision had been announced by Bhubaneswar civic body Mayor Sulochana Das following a preparatory meeting held on January 2.
As part of the security arrangements, around 100 CCTV cameras will be installed at strategic locations across the Mela venue to monitor crowd movement and deter criminal activities. In addition, adequate police personnel will be deployed to prevent theft and ensure smooth conduct of the festival.
Special emphasis had been placed on safeguarding women, children, and elderly visitors.
Reiterating the civic body’s stand, Mayor Das had stressed that obscenity would not be tolerated under any circumstances. The Jatra committees had been informed of the decision and had extended their cooperation to ensure compliance.
