Bhubaneswar set for major traffic upgrade with Jayadev Vihar–Nandankanan elevated corridor project

The Jayadev Vihar–Nandankanan road corridor in Bhubaneswar is set for a major facelift with the launch of a dedicated elevated corridor aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving urban mobility. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi laid the foundation stone of the project on Monday.

The proposed elevated corridor will stretch from Jayadev Vihar to Nandankanan and is expected to significantly streamline traffic movement along one of the city’s busiest routes. As part of the project, flyovers will be constructed at major traffic junctions, including Jayadev Vihar Square, Kalinga Hospital Square, Damana Square, and KIIT Square, to ensure smoother and uninterrupted vehicular flow.

At Jayadev Vihar Square, plans include the construction of a four-lane cable-stayed bridge, which is expected to become a prominent infrastructure landmark in the city. The bridge has been designed to improve traffic circulation at the congested intersection while also enhancing the city’s urban landscape.

In addition to traffic infrastructure, the project places emphasis on environmental sustainability. As part of the development, 22,410 trees will be planted along both sides of the road to improve greenery and maintain ecological balance in the area.

The entire project will be executed at an estimated cost of Rs 952 crore and is aimed at strengthening Bhubaneswar’s road network while ensuring improved safety standards. The foundation stone-laying ceremony will be held as part of the observance of Road Safety Month, underlining the government’s focus on safer and more efficient road infrastructure.

Once completed, the elevated corridor is expected to reduce travel time, minimise traffic bottlenecks, and enhance connectivity between key residential, institutional, and commercial areas along the Jayadev Vihar–Nandankanan stretch.
