Egg prices in Bhubaneswar have witnessed a sharp rise over the past week, adding to household expenses as supply continues to lag behind demand. Traders said the price of eggs has increased by Rs 2 per piece within a week.

At the Unit-4 non-vegetarian market in Bhubaneswar, eggs are currently selling at Rs 9 per piece, up from Rs 7 a week ago. The price of an egg tray has risen significantly from Rs 190 to Rs 230, while a full box of eggs is now being sold at around Rs 1,560.

Drop in Ganjam Supply Pushes Up Egg Prices

Traders said Odisha is largely dependent on neighbouring Andhra Pradesh for egg supplies. Within the state, Ganjam district is a major supplier catering to Bhubaneswar and other urban markets. However, supply from Ganjam has declined in recent days, leading to shortages in the capital’s markets.

“The inflow of eggs is currently lower than the demand, which has pushed prices upward,” said trader Radhashyam Sahoo, adding that business has slowed since the price hike. Vendors noted that customers are purchasing fewer eggs than usual due to the sudden increase in prices.

Consumers also expressed concern over the rising rates. “The price of one egg has now crossed Rs 8. Even if prices go up, we have to consume eggs. There is no alternative,” a consumer said.

Traders said prices are likely to stabilise only if supply improves in the coming days.
