Bhubaneswar Satya Nagar crematorium gets Rs 3.32 crore makeover with modern facilities

The long-neglected Satya Nagar crematorium in Bhubaneswar has been renovated for Rs 3.32 crore, significantly upgrading facilities for the public. The renovated crematorium was inaugurated on Friday by Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra, along with Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) Mayor Sulochana Das.

The crematorium had remained in a dilapidated condition for several years, causing inconvenience to residents. The redevelopment aims to provide a dignified and well-equipped space for the last rites of the deceased.

As part of the renovation, a new gas-based cremation system has been introduced to facilitate cleaner and more efficient cremations. In addition, several new infrastructures have been developed, including a pond, a temple, toilets, and a dedicated building for performing rituals and prayers during funeral ceremonies.

The cremation charge has been fixed at Rs 2,000. However, Mayor Sulochana Das said that families holding ration cards will be eligible for free cremation services under the Harischandra Yojana.

Officials said the upgraded Satya Nagar crematorium will help ease pressure on other cremation grounds in the city and ensure better civic amenities for grieving families.

“The development of the Satya Nagar crematorium was necessary. Several new infrastructures, including a pond and toilets, have been built, which are required,” Mahapatra said.
