The project is aimed at turning the ageing facility into a modern urban recreation hub, informed Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra on Thursday. He said the overhaul would begin in 2026 and significantly upgrade public amenities and leisure infrastructure in the city.

Modern Makeover For Nicco Park

Providing details, the minister said the redevelopment plan envisages a complete ‘new look’ for the BDA City Centre. The park will be developed in three phases with an investment exceeding Rs 600 crore. It will be equipped with modern facilities so that people of all age groups can use it as a major recreational space, sources quoted the minister.

According to the plan outlined by the government, the upgraded park will feature a dedicated food court, a market complex, multiple entertainment zones and boating facilities.

Phased Redevelopment To Modernise Facilities

According to information shared by Minister Mahapatra, the three-phase approach is designed to ensure systematic redevelopment while keeping parts of the park accessible to the public during construction.

The initial phase is expected to focus on core infrastructure and site development, followed by the addition of commercial and entertainment facilities, and finally, recreational and activity-based amenities.

Expands On Earlier Redevelopment Plans

The latest announcement marks a significant scale-up from earlier proposals. In September, the state government had indicated that a detailed project report had been prepared to redevelop the BDA City Centre into an ultramodern recreational facility with a Rs 250 crore plan.

The Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) had earlier announced plans to modernise the stormwater channel and lake zone adjoining the City Centre area, including landscaping, walkways and restoration works, which have already received state approval.
