Political tensions flared following a minor girl gang rape case in Bhubaneswar. The Leader of Opposition (LoP) and BJD supremo Naveen Patnaik expressed concern over the incident on Tuesday, describing it as ‘extremely disturbing and unsettling’.

The Opposition leader warned that ‘brutality and lawlessness’ are pushing the State Capital towards insecurity, leaving criminals fearless and undermining public trust in the State government.
Patnaik further criticised the State’s failure to prevent crime, saying citizens are being left fearful due to inadequate action against offenders. He called on the Government to take urgent steps to ensure women’s safety and curb criminal tendencies.
In a post on X, Naveen Patnaik stated, “The incident is extremely shocking and disturbing. Barbarity and lawlessness are crossing all limits, and the State Capital is becoming unsafe. Criminals are becoming fearless, and the government is losing credibility.”
“State government’s inability to prevent crime is frightening the public. Government should take measures to ensure women’s safety and curb criminal tendencies,” Naveen added.
Deputy CM Pravati Parida responded strongly, countering Patnaik’s statements. The Deputy CM emphasised that political commentary should not exploit tragic incidents, and the public cannot rely on such statements for reassurance.
The Deputy CM confirmed that police have already taken action and arrested the accused, highlighting that law enforcement is proceeding according to procedure.
Deputy CM Parida also underlined that the State government is committed to addressing criminal activity while maintaining public order. “This is not a stage for a political showdown. The government is following the path of law,” she stated, stressing measured action and responsibility over political rhetoric.
“One does not expect political commentary from a person of your stature. It would be appreciated if a letter is written based on personal experience,” the Deputy CM added.
