Bhubaneswar Development Authority lays foundation for redevelopment of 2 major crematoriums

A new initiative, spearheaded by the Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA), aims to provide modernized facilities and ensure a dignified space for last rites. As a part of this initiative, MLA of Ekamra, Babu Singh, on Friday laid the foundation stones for the redevelopment of two major crematoriums at Kaligadia and Garabadu in Bhubaneswar’s Old Town area. 

According to project details, the Kaligadia crematorium will be redeveloped at an estimated cost of Rs 2.21 crore, while the Garabadu crematorium will undergo renovation for Rs 1.85 crore. The redevelopment plans include the construction of parking areas, boundary walls, and security kiosks at both sites.

In addition, facilities such as staff rooms, caretaker rooms, separate changing areas for men and women, waiting halls, pyre wood storage areas, and cremation platforms (pindis) will be provided.

To enhance the surroundings, the BDA will also develop water bodies, internal pathways, peripheral drains, and landscaped areas, creating a clean, green, and peaceful environment for visitors and families.

The foundation-laying ceremony was attended by local corporators, BDA Secretary Manas Ranjan Padhi, and other senior officials. Speaking at the event, BDA Vice-Chairman Chanchal Rana urged local residents to cooperate for the timely completion of both projects. He also mentioned that the BDA is working on another modern crematorium at Dumuduma.

These redevelopment projects reflect the government’s commitment to providing dignified, accessible, and well-maintained facilities for the deceased and their families. As Bhubaneswar grows as a Smart City, such initiatives aim to meet the city’s rising needs while promoting cleanliness, respect, and compassion during times of grief.
