Six people were seriously injured after a swarm of honeybees attacked mourners during a funeral ceremony in Odisha's Rayagada district. The incident took place at the Kalyansinghpur cremation ground on Saturday.
According to reports, the bees suddenly emerged from a hive located beneath the Kalyani River bridge nearby and launched an aggressive attack on those present. Panic ensued as mourners attempted to flee the area.
Victims Rushed To Hospital
Following the incident, the injured individuals were immediately shifted to the Kalyansinghpur Community Health Centre for medical treatment. Hospital sources confirmed that six of them were in a critical condition after sustaining severe stings at the time of reporting.
Eyewitnesses described the suddenness of the attack, stating that the bees targeted a small group initially but soon spread across the crowd.
Family Member Recounts Incident
A family member present at the site said, “One of our relatives had passed away, and we were there to perform the last rites. In the middle of the rituals, a swarm of honeybees suddenly attacked everyone. They particularly targeted three to four people, who were stung more than 40 times.”
Locals said that the cremation site is frequently used by villagers and expressed concern over the incident.
