A B-Tech student in Odisha has been arrested after he allegedly attempted to fund an iPhone purchase for his girlfriend’s birthday by smuggling ganja. The incident took place in Malkangiri district, where police intercepted the youth during routine patrolling.
Police on MV-79 patrol duty on Saturday apprehended Dhiren Kumar, a B-Tech student, along with his accomplice. The pair was reportedly transporting 22 kilograms of ganja with the intention of selling it to raise money. According to investigators, Dhiren had planned to use the proceeds to gift an expensive iPhone to his girlfriend on her birthday.
Police Seize 22 kg Ganja
Authorities revealed that the accused were travelling with multiple packets of ganja when they were spotted by the MV-79 police unit. Suspicion led officers to search them, resulting in the recovery of 22kg of contraband. Both men were arrested on the spot and later produced in court.

A Risky Plan with Serious Consequences
Police sources said the student admitted he needed quick money and resorted to illegal smuggling to fulfil his girlfriend’s birthday wish. Officers cautioned that such actions not only violate the law but also ruin academic careers.

The case serves as a sharp reminder of how impulsive decisions can derail young lives. The investigation is ongoing, and police expect further leads in the cannabis supply chain.
