Bhubaneswar: Odisha DGP Abhay on Saturday suspended inspector Sandhya Rani Jena of Patana Police Station in Keonjhar district on the charges of ‘misconduct.’ Jena was earlier accused of brutally thrashing a youth in custody. The matter had come to light after a video of the alleged assault inside police station had gone viral on several social media platforms.

As per reports, the victim Raju Mahant was assaulted by the lady cop over an alleged land dispute. In the video, Jena was seen kicking and thrashing Mahant with a stick in presence of other police personnel inside the Patana Police Station.

“We had a small dispute during farming on March 25. Police picked us up and kept detained for 25 days,” alleged Mahant.

Following the incident, Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has sought a report from Keonjhar SP in connection with the incident. Apart from seeking a report from the concerned IIC within four weeks, OHRC had also ordered to pay a compensation of Rs 10,000 to the victim. The rights body has asked that the money should be deducted from the salary of the lady cop.
