In a historic moment for Subarnapur, the rare and ancient idols of Bada Gopaljew Temple are finally returning home after more than four decades. The idols, stolen 42 years ago, were recovered by the CBI and kept in court custody for years. On Wednesday, the long-awaited handover took place, marking a significant cultural and spiritual restoration for the region.

Ceremonial Handover in Court

The court released 12 rare Ashtadhatu idols following the order of Special CJM, CBI, Binod Bihari Sahu. The handover was conducted in the presence of the Subarnapur District Collector, where the idols were transferred to the Sub-Collector and Endowment (Executive) officer. The event was steeped in rituals as prayers were performed inside the court, mantras filled the air, and the idols were adorned in new garments by the administration.

A Theft That Shook the Region

The idols were stolen from the historic Gopaljew Temple over four decades ago, leading to a major investigation. Three individuals were arrested in connection with the theft. Two of the accused have since died, while one remains out on bail.

The return of the idols marks not just the end of a long legal journey but the revival of an emotional and cultural legacy for the people of Subarnapur. Devotees now await the idols’ reinstatement in the temple where they once belonged.
