Locally grown aromatic rice from Kankadahad block in Dhenkanal district will soon be used for preparing the Mahaprasad of Lord Jagannath at the Puri Srimandir. The speciality of this rice is that it is cultivated through completely organic farming methods, without the use of any chemical fertilisers or pesticides.
According to reports, around 1,500 farmers across 21 panchayats in Kankadahad block are cultivating this traditional aromatic rice over 1,100 hectares of land.
The varieties being produced include Badshah Bhog, Geetanjali, Ketakijuhar, Kalajira, Tilak Kasturi, and Indrani—all known for their rich aroma and high nutritional value.

The rice produced here is collected by a local organization and sent directly to the Jagannath Temple in Puri, where it is used in the preparation of Mahaprasad. Farmers say they feel proud that their produce is being offered to Lord Jagannath, adding that the initiative has not only brought them spiritual satisfaction but also better income.
Last year, nearly 700 hectares were brought under aromatic rice cultivation, but this year the area has increased significantly. Farmers currently sell the rice at around Rs 4,100 per quintal, and the demand is growing rapidly, even reaching international markets like Dubai.
With more government support and promotion, farmers believe they can further expand organic aromatic rice cultivation in Kankadahad and make it a global brand linked to the divine Mahaprasad of Lord Jagannath.
