"The dolphin census began today at around 6 am, with teams starting from two GPS base points at Satapada and Balugaon. A total of 18 teams have been formed to cover different routes across the lake. Some of these routes are longer, while others are shorter, but all 18 routes have been clearly defined. We are following the dolphin estimation methodology prescribed by the Chilika Development Authority. Volunteers from organisations such as WWF and WTI, along with representatives from OUAT, other government and non-government organisations, and wildlife experts, are participating in the exercise. We expect the entire census operation to be completed by 12 noon,” said Wildlife Forest Division DFO, Balugaon Amlan Nayak

Boat Movement Restricted for Smooth Census

To avoid disturbance during the counting process, Wildlife authorities have requested all motor boat associations to halt boat operations in Chilika from 6 am to 12 noon.

With systematic planning and strict monitoring, the ongoing dolphin census is expected to provide crucial insights into the health and population trends of dolphins in Chilika, reinforcing conservation efforts at Asia’s largest brackish water lagoon.
