The Odisha government has decided to phase out diesel-powered ‘Ama Bus’ services from roads and replace them entirely with electric vehicles (EVs) as part of its push towards sustainable and eco-friendly public transportation.
Announcing the decision, Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra on Wednesday said that all existing diesel-run Ama Buses will be gradually scrapped and replaced with EV buses in a phased manner.
Only Electric Buses Soon
According to the Minister, once the transition is completed, only electric buses will operate under the Ama Bus service across the state. The move is aimed at reducing pollution levels, cutting fuel costs, and promoting clean mobility in urban and semi-urban areas. The government is also working on strengthening EV infrastructure, including charging stations, to ensure smooth operation of the new fleet.

In another significant step, the minister announced that women drivers will now be entrusted with operating Ama Buses. As part of the first phase, 20 women drivers will be selected and provided with specialised training for driving heavy vehicles. After completing the training programme, they will be deployed to operate dedicated bus services.
Approval From Odisha CM
“Now, we will only prefer e-buses, and all the diesel buses will be gradually scrapped. In the first phase, at least 20 women are being sent to Pune for driving training in heavy vehicles. After their completion of training in Pune, they will be given Ama Buses for driving. We are also planning to ply special buses only for women passengers. The final decision will be taken after the review by Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Majhi,” informed Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra.
The initiative is expected to enhance safety and confidence among women passengers. Officials said that having women drivers will help create a more secure and comfortable environment for female commuters.
