A disturbing chapter is unfolding at the Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS), with allegations emerging over the mysterious deaths of four tribal students in Odisha within the last five days. Three of the deceased reportedly belonged to Keonjhar district, while one was from the Mohana area of Gajapati.

Families of the students have come forward with serious accusations, alleging foul play in some cases and seeking justice for the unexplained deaths in others. Instead of confining themselves to narratives, families have now approached police stations to formally lodge complaints, intensifying concerns over the safety and administration of the KISS campus.

One such case involves a student from Keonjhar who died on September 5, 2023. The family was initially told that he was suffering from fever, and later that he had died of a heart attack. When the father was taken to the campus by a KISS agent, he learned that his son had already passed away. Shockingly, no post-mortem examination was conducted, and the cause of death was never clearly explained. The body was handed over in an ambulance, and the grieving father was sent back to his village in Ghasipura.

"I could not know anything about the reason behind my son's death. I think they must have killed my son. They sent me from the medical without conducting post-mortem by saying that my son had a heart attack. They didn't give us any documents," said father of a deceased KISS student in 2023.

Allegations have also emerged regarding the handling of other deceased students’ bodies, suggesting violations of legal protocols and the Child Protection Act. Families claim that the bodies were handed over without a post-mortem, raising serious questions about transparency and accountability.

Legal experts and child rights advocates have urged the Odisha State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (OSCPCR) to take immediate cognizance of these complaints, investigate each case thoroughly, and ensure swift government action.

"As he (KISS authority) was involved in the former government, he was getting full help and support. As a result, all these incidents were suppressed. Now, SC and ST Commission is coming to conduct inquiry. We request the government to have proper investigation into the incidents," said educationist RN Panda.

"Some parents are doubtful that their children would have died unnaturally and the KISS authorities might be responsible for it. A chargesheet could be framed over suspicion initiating trial," said lawyer Manas Chand.

The incidents have drawn widespread attention, highlighting lapses in the administration of KISS. The managing authorities have yet to provide clear explanations, fuelling concerns among parents, educationists, and the public. As the investigation continues, the pressing question remains: how many more students must die before the KISS authorities confront the truth and ensure the safety of the children entrusted to their care?

OTV, as a responsible media outlet, continues to bring these alarming developments to light, reporting facts and evidence-based updates on the plight of innocent tribal students.
