The Balasore district administration on Wednesday swung into action after OTV highlighted the alleged violation of pollution control norms at the District Collector’s office premises, where old trees were being indiscriminately felled for construction work. Following the news broadcast, the tree-cutting activity inside the Collectorate campus was stopped.
According to reports, several old and mature trees were being cut down within the Balasore District Collector’s office premises, allegedly in violation of environmental and pollution control regulations. The trees were reportedly felled to facilitate ongoing construction activities.
Disregard For Environmental Norms
OTV aired visuals and details of the incident, raising serious concerns about the apparent disregard for environmental norms, particularly within a key government establishment. The issue sparked public resentment, especially at a time when the state government has imposed restrictions and precautionary measures across various cities to address rising pollution levels.

Citizens and environmental activists questioned how such activities were allowed within the premises of the District Collector’s office while strict guidelines are being enforced elsewhere.
Demolition Despite Restrictions
The situation appeared even more concerning as just a day earlier, an old building was reportedly demolished inside the Collectorate campus despite restrictions issued by the district administration itself. The following day, visuals of large-scale tree cutting further intensified criticism, with many terming it a blatant violation of pollution control norms.
After the issue was brought to light through media coverage, the district administration reportedly intervened and halted the tree-felling work.
The incident has reignited debate over environmental protection and administrative accountability, with demands for clarity on whether necessary permissions were obtained and what steps will be taken to prevent such incidents in the future.
