Malkangiri: At least two jawans of Special Operations Group (SOG) sustained critical injuries in a landmine explosion reportedly triggered by Maoists in Malkangiri district today.

According to reports, the blast took place at Bogapadar hill under Mathili Police limits of the district when a team of SOG jawans were conducting a combing operation based on an intelligence input about the presence of Maoists in the area.

Sources informed that around 30 to 40 red rebels, who were in the hideout, had planted the landmine suspecting a search operation by the security personnel. Later, they triggered the landmine when they saw the security forces in the area.

Following the landmine explosion, an exchange of fire was also reported between the jawans and Maoists. The injured security personnel were immediately rushed to the near-by BSF camp for treatment and they will be air-lifted, if required, sources said.

Meanwhile, a joint combing operation by the jawans and Chhattisgarh police is also underway in the area and several landmines have been recovered from the site.
