In the first accident, a head-on collision between a truck and a car occurred near Bhairavi College Chhak under Purunakatak police limits.
According to sources, the car, travelling from Bhubaneswar towards Bargarh, had a head-on collision with the truck coming from the opposite direction. Three people sustained grievous injuries and were rescued by some locals with the help of police.
The injured were initially taken to Purunakatak hospital and later shifted to Boudh district headquarters hospital (DHH). They are said to be the residents of Bheden locality in Bargarh district.
In another mishap under Harbhanga police limits, a motorcycle lost balance near Badajor nullah on the Phulbani–Shitalpani PWD road. Amulya Behera of Chhatranga village died on the spot, while Ankita Behera of Bhabapur sustained severe injuries.
Ankita was rushed to Harbhanga community health centre (CHC) for treatment.
No comments were received from local police or the victims’ families in this regard.
Separate police teams have begun investigating both incidents.
Worth mentioning, the State is grappling with an unsettling escalation in the road accidents which tragically claim the lives of approximately 15 individuals each day.
The daily average of road accidents stands at 31, resulting in approximately 27 injuries. Transport Minister Bibhuti Bhusan Jena had revealed this disturbing data during a previous session in Odisha Legislative Assembly.
Alarming statistics had earlier surfaced, showing an average of five accidents every four hours, leading to injuries, with three fatalities occurring nearly every five hours.
In the past five years, the State has faced an annual average of 11,366 road accidents, injuring nearly 10,008 people and claiming around 5,433 lives.
