Jajpur: In an incident of alleged police highhandedness, a youth was allegedly beaten inside Jajpur police station for arriving late. The injured youth identified as Maheswar Mahunta, a resident of Sitaleswar under Jajpur police limits, was immediately rushed to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.

As per reports, Maheswar's family was at loggerheads with his neighbour Bijay Rout and his family over some dispute, following which the latter had lodged a complaint with the police.

Based on the complaint, ASI Sudhansu Rout had called both parties to the police station, however, Maheswar turned up late. This  infuriated the ASI and he allegedly thrashed Maheswar.

"The ASI thrashed my son in presence of Bijay. We demand stringent action should be taken against such police officials who harass public," said Maheswar's father Krushnachandra Mahunta.

While, the ASI was not immediately available for comment, Jajpur SDPO Prashant Kumar Mallaha refuted the allegations.

"Case of both the parties have been registered and an enquiry is being conducted on the allegations. Further action will be taken based on the findings and after questioning the youth upon his return from the hospital," said Mallaha.
