Cuttack: Palpable tension prevailed at Tangi on Sunday after hundreds of locals gheraoed the Tangi police station and staged a demonstration demanding immediate arrest of a lawyer involved in thrashing a youth inside the premises of the police station Saturday night.

According to the locals, one Pradyumna Rout of Barunia village in Jajpur district received a phone call from Tangi police station on Saturday and was asked to depose at the police station in relation to a case.

When Rout reached and asked the Inspector In-Charge Bimal Barik about the matter, the IIC told him to wait outside and went on patrolling as the complainant had not arrived, added sources.

In the meantime, four youths reached the police station while the accused Tapas Nayak of Kairapari village in Tangi got down of the car and thrashed Rout mercilessly.

A few police personnel who were present at the police station intervened and managed to free Rout from Nayak’s clutches. Though Rout was rushed to the hospital, the agitating locals alleged that police did not arrest the accused as he was a lawyer.

On the other hand, police informed that necessary action will be taken against all the culprits involved in the incident. “CCTV footage will be thoroughly examined. Eye witnesses will be interrogated and a detailed investigation will be initiated,” Cuttack SDPO, Satyanarayan Das said.
