Berhampur: A youth allegedly slit his throat while in custody at the Gangapur Police Station of Ganjam district today.

As per reports, the youth, identified as Debaraj of Nimina village under Gangapur police limits was taken into custody by police on charges of terrorising villagers by brandishing a gun.

While police officials were busy completing formalities for putting him inside the lock-up, Debaraj suddenly took out a small knife and cut his throat, injuring himself critically.

He was initially rushed to the Bhanjanagar hospital and later shifted to the MKCG hospital after his condition deteriorated.

Bhanjanagar Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Utkal Keshari Das said the youth's condition is stable currently.

"After today's incident, a case has been registered against Debaraj under the Section 25 of Arms Act at the Gangapur Police Station. Once he recovers, further action will be taken against him," informed the SDPO.

According to sources, several cases have been lodged against Debaraj at various police stations of the district.
