Malkangiri: In a robbery straight out of a movie script, a youth allegedly looted gold ornaments worth Rs 35 lakh and cash of Rs 2 lakh from a house by feeding the house owner and his family members sweets laced with intoxicants at Bibiguda colony in the district headquarters town on Monday night.

The house owner who is jeweler said that the youth was staying in his house for the last three months on rent and subsequently won the trust of his family members.

The looter distributed sweets laced with intoxicating substances to all family members of the jeweler and some neighbours at around 8pm on Monday on the pre-text of getting a job. Hours after, all lost consciousness under the influence of the intoxicants.

Later, he broke open the windows and doors of the house with the help of gas cutter and looted the valuables with cash. The family members regained consciousness in the late morning only to find their valuables looted.

"He was staying in our house on rent for last three months and kept a good relationship with us and our children. On Monday evening, he returned from a temple and gave us some sweets. Soon after, we all fell asleep while he broke open the windows and doors with gas cutter and entered the bed room where the articles including necklaces, earrings, finger rings and cash were stored," wife of the jeweler said.

"Still, we are feeling drowsy under the influence of the intoxicating materials," she said adding the Telugu speaking accused was from Guntur in Andhra Pradesh.

He also damaged the CCTV cameras and took away some of the damaged parts.

On being informed, a team of police reached the spot and launched an investigation.

"We have already started out investigation pressing scientific team into service. Prima facie, it seems that the looter used gas cutter to break open the windows and doors. All aspects in the case are being looked into closely. We are confident to crack the case soon," said a police official.
