Brahmagiri: A youth was killed in a group clash over encroachment in Chilika waters for prawn cultivation at Kumarpur village under Kushnaprasad block of Puri district in presence of local Tehsildar and police on Thursday.

The deceased, identified as Badal Behera, was missing after the group clash. Police on Friday recovered Behera’s body and sent it for a postmortem.

Notably, the incident occurred when the Tehsildar went to Nasi, a ‘gheri’ in the Chilika waters close to Kumarpur village, along with police force to hand it over to the villagers who have won the bid from the State-owned Fishfed.

At this moment, some miscreants came in two boats powered by machines and fired 15 rounds of bullets upon the villagers present there along with the Tehsildar injuring eight people.

Though the locals nabbed five of the attackers, four managed to escape.

Meanwhile, the Tehsildar has lodged an FIR against the attackers.

Jagannath Pradhan, Puri Additional SP, said, “A special team has been formed to capture the attackers. Further action will be taken after getting a report from the IIC, who visited the spot today.”
