Nayagarh: A youth from Nayagarh district has been arrested on charges of duping several job aspirants to the tune of Rs 5 lakh by promising them postings at the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) office.

The accused, identified as Abhijit, was arrested on Saturday based on a complaint filed by one Monali Priyadarshini, who happens to be his friend.

The complainant has alleged that Abhijit tricked her to cough up the required money by promising her a job at BMC. Not only Monali, the accused also duped money worth lakhs from her brother and a few other job aspirants in the district.

The accused even issued fake appointment letters to the aspirants from whom he had taken money, she alleged.

The entire fraud came to light after the complainant learnt that the appointment letters are fake and immediately lodged a formal complaint at Sarankul Police Station.

“The accused who had promised me a job was my batch-mate in college. Even though all the process of appointment appeared genuine at first, when we approached him again for the job, we realised that we have been cheated,” said Monali, the complainant.

The duped aspirants later caught hold of Abhijit and handed him over to the police. “Based on the complaint filed by the girl, we have arrested the accused. Preliminary investigation reveals that the accused had taken Rs 5 lakhs from nearly five aspirants. He had also issued fake appointment letters,” said Bimal Mallick, Inspector-in-charge of Sarankul Police Station.
