Bargarh: The 11-day Dhanu Jatra, considered as the world’s largest open-air theatre, kicked off amid gaiety and grandeur at Bargarh on Tuesday.
MPs Prasanna Acharya, Suresh Pujari and MLA Debesh Acharya inaugurated the event in the presence of thousands of spectators.
As per the tradition, a cultural procession was taken out from Gandhi Chhak to Samaleswari temple at around 6 pm. Majestically seated on a bedecked elephant, king of Mathura, Ugrasen moved around the city. In his Raj Darbar, he addressed the issues of the citizens.
Later, he expressed willingness for the marriage of his only daughter Devaki and sought the help of minister Akrura to look for a suitable match and make necessary arrangement for the marriage.
With the suggestions of Akrura, the king selected Basudev as his son-in-law and the marriage was solemnised.
Amid the cheer over solemnisation of the nuptials, the theatre also witnessed the first glimpses of ferocity of Kansa who would soon be seen as the cruel king of the kingdom.
