Bhubaneswar: Barely a few minutes after the commencement of the Winter Session of Odisha Assembly, Speaker Surjya Narayan Patro adjourned the House till 3 pm following uproar by the Opposition.
Both the Congress and BJP raised questions related to the safety and security of women in the State with the leaders of the former party raising slogans against the ruling-BJD in the well of the House.
Terming the adjournment unfortunate, Leader of Opposition (LoP), Pradipta Naik said, “We wanted discussion on the rising cases of harassment against women and the deteriorating law & order situation in the State, but the Speaker declined our proposal and adjourned the proceedings.”
After the adjournment, Congress MLA Tara Bahinipati said that Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had promised dignity to women but incidents like the death of the Lady PEO shows how the govt has miserably failed to keep its promise.
“When we raked up the issue, Assembly Speaker refused to allow discussion. We demand him to stop taking sides with ruling party,” he said.
“Discussions can be done on any sensitive issue only in an ethical manner as per the norms laid out in the Odisha Assembly. We cannot arbitrarily choose to rake up an issue for discussion,” says BJD MLA Amar Satpathy while criticising the Opposition for creating ruckus in the House.
The supplementary budget for the financial year 2019 -2020 is expected to be tabled today after the House resumes proceedings at 3 pm today.
Earlier, Congress moved an adjournment motion notice on women harassment issue while BJP gave notice of adjournment motion on the 'suspicious' death of Haridaspur PEO, Smitarani Biswal.
There will be a total of 30 working days during the winter session out of which 21 days have been earmarked for official business.
